Kneader vs Disperser vs Planetary Mixer
Customers often confuse these three types of equipment during selection. This article explains the differences directly.
High-Speed Disperser
A high-speed rotating disc creates shear and turbulence, suitable for low-medium viscosity liquids and powder-liquid mixing.
- Suitable viscosity: 50 - 50,000 cP
- Features: fast, low cost, but cannot handle pasty high-viscosity materials
Planetary Mixer
Blades rotate on their own axes while orbiting the vessel, with excellent wall scraping, suitable for medium-viscosity pastes.
- Suitable viscosity: 1,000 - 1,000,000 cP
- Features: gentle mixing, thorough scraping, ideal for cosmetics and electronic adhesives
Kneader
Z-type blades rotate in opposite directions in the vessel, creating strong shear and folding - purpose-built for ultra-high viscosity materials.
- Suitable viscosity: 10,000 cP to several million cP
- Features: strongest shear, optional vacuum and heating, ideal for hot-melt adhesive, silicone sealant and butyl rubber
One-line summary
Use a disperser for liquids, a planetary mixer for medium pastes, and a kneader for "chewing-gum" materials of ultra-high viscosity.
For multiple viscosity ranges, kneaders and dispersers can be combined into a multifunctional production line.
